Lower oil helps.
AI still has to prove it.

Stocks finished higher and oil fell as the United States and Iran moved back toward diplomacy. Investors were also preparing for another week of technology earnings.

01

Market setup

U.S. stocks rose across the major indexes.

The S&P 500 gained 1.5%, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.1%, and the Russell 2000 added 1.7%. The move followed a decline in crude oil and renewed diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran.

02

Oil and Iran

Brent crude moved into the low $80s.

Lower oil reduced some of the immediate pressure on fuel and transportation costs. Markets continued to track diplomatic statements, tanker traffic, and export volumes for evidence that the supply risk had changed.

03

AI earnings

Company results remained the next source of new information.

Palantir was scheduled to report after the close, while AMD was due later in the week. Investors were focused on revenue growth, margins, cash flow, and updated company forecasts.

TL;DR

Stocks rose as oil moved lower.

The major U.S. indexes ended August 3 higher, while Brent crude fell into the low $80s. The market was tracking U.S.–Iran talks and waiting for additional company earnings.
